Sonchus oleraceus | Sow thistle | Edible Uses

View photos of the edible plant Sonchus oleraceus (Sow thistle), profiled in Sonoran Desert Food Plants and Wild Edible Plants of Texas.

A passage from Sonoran Desert Food Plants:

Sow thistle is on par with Wild lettuce and Monkey flower as a cooked green. It may not be the best wild edible, but it works well to round out some of the better tasting cacti fruit and legumes.

A passage from Wild Edible Plants of Texas:

A weedy non–native annual, look for the Sow thistle in disturbed soils such as vacant lots, walkway sides, grassy park edges, and secondary roadsides.
