Schoenoplectus acutus var. occidentalis | Tule | Edible Uses

View photos of the edible plant Schoenoplectus acutus var. occidentalis (Tule), profiled in Southern California Food Plants and Wild Edible Plants of New Mexico.

A passage from Southern California Food Plants:

Tule is similar to Cattail in edibility and importance as an ‘almost all parts can be used’ plant. The springtime emerging young stems/shoots are ten raw or cooked. After the stems have matured they are cut at the base and peeled of their outer sheathing layers.

A passage from  Wild Edible Plants of New Mexico:

Two varieties of Tule are found in New Mexico: var. acutus and var. occidentalis. For both plants, appearance (and uses) are practically identical. Marsh, lake, pond, and reservoir margins are common habitats for Tule.
