Sabal minor | Dwarf palmetto | Edible Uses

View photos of the edible plant, Sabal minor (Dwarf palmetto), profiled in the Wild Edible Series: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas: Vol 1.

A passage from Wild Edible Plants of Arkansas:

Like all Palms, Dwarf palmetto has an edible core/heart/lower stem. If the individual plant is old enough to have a central new–frond growth sprout, it will be a good edible specimen.

A passage from Wild Edible Plants of Texas (Vol 1):

The large pea to small grape–sized purple/black fruit are ripe from late summer to mid–fall. Although they are mostly seed, the thin outer flesh layer is sweet (but odd–tasting) and edible.
