View photos of the edible plant, Dichelostemma capitatum (Bluedicks), profiled in the Wild Edible Series: California: Volume 1, Oregon, and Sonoran.
A passage from Wild Edible Plants of California: Volume 1:
One of the tastier Lily family plants, Bluedicks is edible from flower and stem to root bulb. The flower and
stem are easy to eat when in the field. The bulbs take a little more effort, but are worth the work.
A passage from Sonoran Desert Food Plants:
Bluedicks can be confused with a number of Wild onion species (Allium). Usually the two plants do not overlap in range (Wild onion tends to grow at higher elevations). If in doubt, unearth several bulbs. If onion–scented then it is in fact Wild onion.
