A passage from Medicinal Plants of the Western Mountain States:

Hounds’s tongue is a topically applied vulnerary, essentially identical in use to Comfrey. Due to its allantoin concentration, it is best used as a mender of wounds, ulcerations, and cuts. Additionally, it excels as a burn dressing and healer of residual tissue disruption from bites, stings, and outbreaks.

Not to be used internally, Hound’s tongue contains a number of hepatoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids, often in concentrations higher than Russian comfrey. Grazing animals usually avoid the fresh plant, but if enough of it is
accidentally included in hay, it can cause poisonings.
