Arbutus arizonica | Arizona madrone | Edible and Medicinal Uses

View photos of the edible and medicinal plant Arbutus arizonica (Arizona madrone), profiled in Medicinal Plants of the Western Mountain States and Wild Edible Plants of Arizona.

A passage from Medicinal Plants of the Western Mountain States:

What all this means for the Madrone user is – take the tea daily for the treatment of non–complicated/non–organic UTIs, be them bladder or urethra oriented. Try 2–3 cups a day if in the throes of an active infection or 1 cup at the slightest urinary irritation. If Cranberry is found effective, Madrone should be as well.

A passage from Wild Edible Plants of Arizona:

Madrone berries are a fair edible. They are better tasting than Manzanita berries but not quite as good as Blueberries (all Heath family plants). In years of poor rainfall, they can be a bit mealy and only mildly sweet, but still, it’s a worthwhile plant to know, regardless of high or low precipitation.
