Anoda crenatiflora | Thicket anoda | Edible Uses

View photos of the edible plant Anoda crenatiflora (Thicket anoda).

Anoda crenatiflora is locally common, but nationally scarce. It’s only found in Santa Cruz County, AZ and the Big Bend area of TX. Greater populations exist in Mexico. As edibles go, it has the same uses/taste as Anoda cristata; however, due to its rarity, I never eat more than a handful or so of the leaves; nor do I gather it to take home.

Photos were taken in the upper foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains (south side).

A passage from Wild Edible Plants of Arizona:

As a spinach–like cooked green, simmer the leaves for 10–15 minutes and serve with butter and seasonings. Like other plants in the Mallow family, once cooked a subtle sliminess may be noticed. This can be eliminated by a quick water rinse prior to serving.
