View photos of the edible plant Lycium californicum (California wolfberry), profiled in the Wild Edible Series: California and Sonoran (as Lycium spp.).
A passage from Wild Edible Plants of California:
Wolfberry is found throughout low and mid elevations of southern California. A perennial bush, most species are associated with Creosote bush and desert scrub environments.
A passage from Sonoran Desert Food Plants:
The raw berries can be eaten in limited quantities (several ounces or so at a time), more so if first dried or stewed. A bland–sweetish to slightly bitter tasting fruit, Wolfberry is distinctly nightshade in taste.
