Commelina erecta | Dayflower | Edible Uses

View photos of the edible plant Commelina erecta (Dayflower), profiled in Wild Edible Plants of Texas, Wild Edible Plants of Arizona, and Wild Edible Plants of New Mexico.

A passage from Wild Edible Plants of Texas:

As Texas’ most abundant species of Dayflower, Commelina erecta is variable in habitat; however, it is most often associated with sun–exposed forest edges, field sides, grassy areas, and rocky hillsides and slopes.

A passage from Wild Edible Plants of Arizona:

The roots of Dayflower are fleshy and mild (usually). If found somewhat stringy or marginal–tasting (when soil conditions are dry) a quick water boil and seasoning will help to improve their texture and taste.

A passage from Wild Edible Plants of New Mexico:

Found at slightly lower elevations, Commelina erecta (Whitemouth dayflower) is common to grassland orientations in eastern parts of the state.
