OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Charles W. Kane in Afghanistan | 2007-08

Here’s the PG-rated synopsis of my Afghanistan tour with the 1-158 Infantry Regiment (aka the Bushmasters).

Every year or so I go through the photos and play some of the clips, and just recently I set aside the time to make a short compilation. I’m happy with it, especially since I had only a bare-bones digital camera that just happened to take short videos. The poor thing – it broke my last month there.

What was it like? There’s no good answer. But if I had to try, as a lowly 11B, E-2/-3 who was outside-the-wire nearly everyday, imagine 12 months of boredom-tedium punctuated by intense bursts of adrenaline-anger-anxiety. There wasn’t a whole lot of middle ground.

If transported back in time and given the chance, would I do it all over again? Absolutely…however I came back unscathed. Not everyone did.
